Community gathers for ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating improved access, safety, and waterfront enhancements
Sausalito, CA – September 5, 2025 – The Sausalito waterfront came alive Friday morning as community members, local leaders, and officials gathered to celebrate the completion of the Sausalito Ferry Landing Improvement Project.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together current and former City Council members, regional representatives, and residents to officially unveil the redesigned Ferry Plaza — a project years in the making that enhances both the functionality and beauty of one of Sausalito’s most important transportation hubs.
The revitalized plaza features wider, safer pedestrian and bicycle pathways, redesigned queuing zones for ferry riders and cyclists, accessible parking, eco-friendly landscaping, and a new pedestrian promenade with sustainable furniture and planters. These improvements create a more welcoming and efficient space for locals and the millions of visitors who pass through each year.
Mayor Joan Cox, Melissa Apuya representing Assemblymember Damon Connolly, Doreen Gounard on behalf of Marin County Supervisor Stephanie Moulton-Peters, and Denis Mulligan, General Manager of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, spoke about the project’s importance to Sausalito’s future.
Mayor Cox and City Manager Chris Zapata also praised Public Works Director McGowan, Capital Planning and Project Manager Sara Khorshidifard, and architects Jacques Ullman, Bill Hynes, and Michael Rex. Thanks were extended to the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce, The Inn Above Tide, Sausalito Center for the Arts, Sausalito Yacht Club, and residents for their contributions and vision.
Adding to the celebration, the Southern Marin Fire District’s fireboat “Liberty” provided a dramatic water salute, symbolizing the strong partnership between SMFD, the City of Sausalito, and the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. SMFD was represented by Fire Chief Chris Tubbs and members of its leadership and Engine 7 crew.
The $2.6 million project was funded through federal grants, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, and the City of Sausalito — a strong example of regional cooperation benefiting the community.
The completion of the project signals a new chapter for Sausalito’s waterfront, strengthening its role as a vital transportation hub and welcoming gateway for decades to come.
