Sausalito Artist Looks Back After twenty-one years at his Caledonia Street location in Sausalito --San Francisco painter John Wilmer -- is hosting a five-decade retrospective of his career. The opening features work from throughout his long career -- including both figurative and abstract paintings -- from landscapes to conceptual representations. The opening is Saturday, June 9 from noon to eight at the John Wilmer Gallery -- 333 Caledonia Street in Sausalito and will include a free performance by the noted a capella men's choir -- The Conspiracy of Beards singing the songs of the late Leonard Cohen. John's education highlights are School of Visual Arts in New York City, Art History at University of California, Riverside, M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking at University of Utah. He is a former art teacher for Skagit Valley College, University of Utah, and Cabrillo College. A master artist of painting, printmaking, drawing, watercolor, and photography, Wilmer says of his work, "My paintings are inspired by the landscape, particularly my love of the nature. I have lived on islands, mountain tops, and the high desert. Interiors, people, and objects from my home find their way into my imagery." Wilmer -- who recently entered the San Francisco Hospice program -- says hosting a "going-away" party in order to enjoy his own memorial. Focusing on mounting the show while continuing to create new work is a great form of palliative care. http://www.johnwilmer.com/about/ http://www.sausalitohistoricalsociety.com/new-blog/ For more information contact Martin Hickel -- poetnews@sonic.net 415.305.9341
