Wine bars bring Napa, Sonoma wines to youJune 05, 2018

Marin County sits on the doorstep of both the Sonoma and Napa wine countries. A great day trip has always been the wine-tasting trip. But one huge drawback with a wine tasting trip is that someone has to drive, and drinking and driving is always a bad idea, which means that someone is going to be left out of the tasting.
Sure, you can book a ride sharing car but a trip to Napa or Sonoma isn’t going to be cheap. Not by a long shot.
But what if Wine Country came to you? At least in the form of a reasonable ride-sharing trip, or even a short walk. There are many wine bars in Marin; here are four Marin that feature expert help and fabulous wines.
BACCHUS and VENUS
Sausalito’s 16-year-old Bacchus and Venus is the elder statesman of the group. Owner Marcy Roth cut her wine teeth under the tutelage of Ravenswood’s Reed Foster. Her cozy wine bar with upstairs art gallery (currently featuring Sausalito artist Deborah Cushman) is heavy on California wine. In fact, it is all California wine with a couple of Champagnes. The focus is on small producers, such as Rally Point pinot noir (160 cases produced).
Cheese boards and charcuterie are available, and there are four flight tastings of four wines, totaling about one 6-ounce glass; a sampler selection ($18), an all red selection ($20), an all reserve ensemble ($34) and a dessert wine flight ($15).
“Without Ceres [god of bread] and Bacchus [god of wine], Venus [goddess of love] freezes,” said Roman playwright Publius Terentius Afer, better known as Terence.
