ABout Sausalito

Sausalito is a charming waterfront community that lies across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Because of its Mediterranean flair and breathtaking views, it is often compared to the French Riviera.

Named by a Spanish explorer for the little willows (saucelitos) growing along its shores, Sausalito has been a vibrant area since the early 1800s, when sailors, whalers & shipbuilders settled here.

Today, you can stroll along the water and watch the sea lions cavort, rest in the plaza and listen to the splashing fountain, soak up the ambiance in the many open air cafes, browse through the unique boutiques, and check out the marinas. You can visit the Bay Model Visitor Center, a 1.5 acre working model of the bay, Sausalito’s famous houseboat community, or the Bay Area Discovery Museum, which contains interactive displays for kids of all ages. And there are many well groomed hiking and biking trails, as well as easy access to Muir Woods and Mt Tam.

Sausalito hosts a thriving artist community, so it’s not surprising that the town sports several world-class art galleries and is the home of the #1 outdoor fine-art fair in the nation. The Sausalito Art Festival takes place every Labor Day weekend.

For overnight guests there are five hotels, each with its special brand of charm and hospitality. And the town hosts a wide range of first-class restaurants, including those that have garnered national awards.

Sausalito is easily accessible by car or bus over the Golden Gate Bridge or by ferry from Fisherman’s Wharf or the Ferry Building on San Francisco’s Embarcadero.

Stop by our visitor information kiosks, one next to the ferry landing and the other at the historic Ice House, the town's official Visitor Center, 780 Bridgeway (corner of Bridgeway and Bay).

Directions

Sausalito is located on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Heading north on US-101 after crossing the bridge, take the first exit at Alexander Ave. and follow the road 1.5 miles until you reach the heart of downtown Sausalito. From Marin County and wine country, head south on US-101 to the Sausalito/Marin City exit and follow the signs to Sausalito - roughly 3 miles of businesses and merchants traverse Bridgeway – leading you to downtown Sausalito.

Many people also enjoy visiting Sausalito by means of the Blue & Gold ferry boat from Fisherman’s Wharf and from the Golden Gate’s ferry terminal in San Francisco.
