Jack Beck has been appropriately described as a “committed colorist.” He is also the most “venerable” member of the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce, i.e. our first member. His paintings start from real scenes, but the reality is merely a pretext for his color schemes. Beck feels free to pick and choose the colors that best serve the painting, but always within the realm of reality.
The colors are usually rational, usually pleasant. But Beck is not afraid to tease the viewer into accepting orange skies, red trees, or yellow ponds.
The results are mostly quiet pastures that glow rather than flash. They invite long, deep looks that start with the image and then slowly turn to examine how the effects are produced. These are paintings that provoke smiles.
