Carol Lauten’s photography consists largely of architectural
elements/details and landscapes often including remnants of the
past. Architectural fragments rich in patina are mysteriously infused
by natural light. Black and white, color and hand colored images
disclose an essential presence of place. The custom, color rendering
is produced in collaboration with her husband, Anthony Garrett,
and adds a unique interpretation to the work.
A native Californian, Carol began photographing after receiving
a degree (art history and library science) from CA State University
in San Jose and has studied with Michael Kenna, Ruth Thorne-Thomsen
and Gail Skoff among others. She has lived and worked in Fance twice
for 18 months each sojourn and continues to travel often to France,
Italy and Greece. An extensive portfolio includes images from most
of western Europe, Morocco, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Tahiti, Mexico,
Canada and the U.S.
Images can be seen currently in Sausalito upstairs at Studio 333
located at 333 Caledoniia and the Sausalito Chamber of Commerce
office at 10 Liberty Ship Way. Carol and Tony became Sausalito residents
in 2001 to begin living the Mediterranean life fulltime in a little
hillside home (poggio) that they rebuilt. New work from an Italian
horticultural garden called Venzano where they will stay in a converted
monastery will be ready for a Fall Open Home Studio planned for
11/ 12-13. Contact carol.lauten@mindspring.com or call 415.332.5111
for an invitation. Websites presenting their joint work are: artsources.net
and cmtg.tv. Coming soon: sausalitoarts.com.
